Understanding Offset Printing Boxes
Offset is the printing process behind most high-quality packaging: fine text, smooth gradients, photographs and colour that stays the same from one run to the next. On a corrugated box it lets an industrial carton carry print that would otherwise need a separate printed label or sleeve.
How offset printing works
Offset lithography transfers ink in two steps. The image is carried on a metal plate, one plate per colour. The plate transfers the inked image to a rubber blanket, and the blanket prints it onto the sheet — the image is “offset” from plate to paper rather than printed directly. The rubber blanket meets the sheet evenly, which is why offset holds fine detail so well.
Full-colour work uses four plates — cyan, magenta, yellow and black — printed one over another. Together they reproduce photographs, gradients and most brand colours.
Offset needs a smooth, flat sheet, and corrugated board’s surface follows the flutes beneath it. On corrugated boxes, offset print is therefore usually made on the outer sheet first, which is then combined with the fluted board. Our step-by-step guide walks through the sequence.

Designing artwork for an offset printed box
- Send vector artwork — PDF or AI — with images at print resolution.
- Work in CMYK, or tell us which brand colours must match, so we can say how they will print.
- Design for the box, not a flat sheet. A box is seen from several sides; decide which panel faces the shelf or the aisle.
- Keep fine text away from folds and flaps, where creases and closures break it up.
- Leave clear space around barcodes so they scan.
- Place handling marks where they will be seen once the boxes are stacked on a pallet.
What offset printing costs
Offset has a fixed set-up cost — plates and make-ready — that is spread across the run. The cost per box therefore falls as the quantity rises, which is why offset suits repeat orders and larger runs. The minimum for a particular box depends on its size and number of colours, and is confirmed with the quote.
Print and strength together
A printed box still has to carry its load. Because the board and the print are made in the same plant, an offset-printed box can be specified in 5, 7 or 9 ply for an industrial load — branding and identification on a box built for the route, rather than print limited to light cartons.
