What Customized Means for a Corrugated Box
“Customized” is often used to mean a logo printed on a stock box. For industrial packaging it means more: every decision about the box is taken from the product it carries and the route it travels. There are seven of those decisions, and a good manufacturer will ask about all of them before quoting.
The seven things you customise
| # | Choice | Decided by |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Internal dimensions | The product, plus any insert or clearance |
| 02 | Box style | How it is packed, closed and opened — slotted carton or die-cut style |
| 03 | Ply | Weight, stacking height and route |
| 04 | Board grade and bursting strength | The load and the handling |
| 05 | Flute | Cushioning, puncture resistance and print surface |
| 06 | Inserts, partitions, handles | The product’s shape, fragility, and whether it is carried or palletised |
| 07 | Print and finish | Identification, handling marks, brand; lamination |
A manufacturer who quotes a custom box without asking about the load, the stack and the route is quoting a size, not a box.
Measuring for a custom box
Box sizes are given as length × width × height, measured on the inside, where length is the longer side of the opening. Internal dimensions matter because the board has thickness: a 7 ply box built to the same outside size as a 3 ply box has noticeably less room inside.
- Measure the product at its largest points, including any fittings that stick out.
- Add the thickness of any insert, partition or wrapping that goes in with it.
- Allow a small clearance so the product goes in without force — but not enough to move.
- If the product varies from batch to batch, tell us the range, not just one sample.
The simplest route is to send the product itself, or a drawing, and let us measure it.
How a custom order runs
- You share the part: weight, dimensions, transit route and how it is handled.
- We specify it: ply, board grade, flute, bursting strength and dimensions, in writing, with a delivered price.
- You test a sample: a physical sample made to that specification, tested with your actual product.
- Bulk production: the approved specification goes into production, and repeat orders run to the same one.
When a custom box pays for itself
- Damage. A box that holds the product still prevents the rubbing, shifting and corner impacts behind most transit damage.
- Material. No oversized box, and less loose filling to buy and pack.
- Freight. Less air per box means more units per pallet and container, and lower volumetric charges with couriers.
- Packing time. A product that drops into a fitted insert packs faster than one that has to be wrapped and padded.
